Georgia Gergeti Tours

Gergeti Trinity Church

Built in the 14th century, Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba) served historically as a refuge for religious relics moved from Mtskheta during periods of invasion. It remains an active monastery, and its isolated position, often cut off from the village below by cloud cover, has made it a lasting symbol of the Georgian highlands.

According to local tradition, sacred relics carried from Mtskheta during periods of Persian invasion were once hidden within the church for safekeeping, part of a wider pattern of moving religious treasures into the mountains during times of threat. Whether or not every detail of the story holds up, it reflects the site's long-standing role as a place of refuge rather than simply a scenic overlook.

Trekking Around Kazbek

Gergeti is the starting point for hikes into the surrounding Kazbek massif, including routes toward the Gergeti Glacier and longer treks that continue into the Truso Valley and the Chaukhi Mountains. The trail to the church and the trekking routes further into the mountains are most accessible between June and September, once snow has cleared from the higher paths. Winter visits remain possible by 4x4, though the glacier and summit routes close to hikers once snowfall sets in.
