Georgia Gori Tours

Gori Tours focus on a small city in central Georgia, roughly 85 kilometers west of Tbilisi along the Mtkvari River valley. The city is widely known as the birthplace of Joseph Stalin, and its central Stalin Museum documents his life through original photographs, personal belongings and the small wooden house where he was born, now enclosed within the museum grounds.

Gori also serves as the gateway to Uplistsikhe, a rock-hewn cave city carved into a cliff above the Mtkvari River. Many visitors combine the two sites in a single day, often as part of a longer Georgia itinerary that continues toward Tbilisi, Kazbegi or Kakheti.

Stalin Museum

The Stalin Museum opened in 1957 and remains one of the most visited sites in Gori. Exhibits trace his early life in the city, his education, his role in the Soviet leadership and the Second World War, alongside the armored railway carriage he used displayed on the museum grounds. The house where he was born in 1878 stands under a purpose-built pavilion beside the main building.

Uplistsikhe Cave Town

Uplistsikhe, meaning "Fortress of the Lord," dates back to the early Iron Age and ranks among the oldest urban settlements in the Caucasus. Chambers, halls and a theater are carved directly into the sandstone cliff, with parts of the site in continuous use from roughly the 6th century BC until the Mongol invasions of the 13th century AD. The theater, added during the Hellenistic period, once staged open-air performances for the surrounding community, one of the few such structures surviving from that era in the Caucasus. A walking route passes former wine cellars, a pharmacy hall and a Christian basilica added later at the site's summit.

Gori Fortress

Above the city center, the medieval Gori Fortress, known locally as Goris Tsikhe, occupies a rocky outcrop with views over the Mtkvari valley. First documented in the 13th century and rebuilt several times since, it is largely a shell of stone walls and towers today, though its raised position over the valley makes it a short, worthwhile stop between the museum and Uplistsikhe.

Gori Today

The modern city is organized around Stalin Avenue and a central square, close to where the Mtkvari and Liakhvi rivers meet on the edge of town. Gori sits near the administrative boundary with South Ossetia and was affected during the August 2008 conflict, when parts of the center sustained damage; reconstruction in the years since has restored much of the city's public space and housing stock.

Gori and Uplistsikhe sit close enough to Tbilisi that most visitors see both on a single day tour, usually departing in the morning and returning by evening. Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable conditions for Uplistsikhe's exposed cliffside paths, while the Stalin Museum's indoor galleries make it a suitable stop throughout the year, including the hotter summer months when open-air sites are less pleasant at midday.
