Inland to Khao Sok

Away from the ferry piers, Surat Thani province holds Khao Sok National Park, one of the oldest rainforests in the world, older by some estimates than the Amazon. Floating bungalows on the emerald water of Cheow Lan Lake, hemmed in by limestone towers, have become one of the region's more distinctive overnight stops.

A Working Transit Town

Surat Thani city itself is more transport hub than destination, with a night train from Bangkok and a pier feeding ferries out to Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao. Rubber and coconut plantations cover much of the surrounding lowland, and some farms still use trained pig-tailed macaques to harvest coconuts, a tradition worth seeing on the way through.
