Festivals Worth Timing a Trip Around

Chiang Mai hosts some of Thailand's most photographed celebrations. Loy Krathong and the Lanna lantern festival known as Yi Peng usually fall in November, filling the sky and the Ping River with light. Songkran, the Thai new year in mid-April, turns the old city moat into the country's biggest water fight.

Markets and Cooking

The Sunday Walking Street along Ratchadamnoen Road fills with handicrafts, textiles and northern Thai dishes such as khao soi and sai oua sausage. Several cooking schools around the city teach these regional recipes in half-day classes that start with a visit to a local market.

Cooler Air in the North

Sitting higher and further from the coast than Bangkok, Chiang Mai stays noticeably cooler from November to February, when the surrounding hills are also at their greenest after the rainy season.
