Highlights
Itinerary
Edirne, the former capital of the Ottoman Empire, has a rich history and cultural heritage, as well as numerous Ottoman architectural marvels worth seeing. Additionally, for over 650 years, the city has hosted the annual Kirkpinar Yagli Guresleri, a traditional Turkish sport of oil wrestling.
The Selimiye Mosque is an Ottoman mosque situated in Edirne Province, which was the previous capital of the Ottomans, Turkey. Sultan Selim II commissioned it, and it was designed and built between 1568 and 1575 by the imperial architect Mimar Sinan. It is considered Sinan's masterpiece and a remarkable achievement in Islamic architecture.
The Ali Pasha Bazaar takes its name from the Grand Vizier Hersekzade Semiz Ali Pasha, who held this position during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. However, Ali Pasha passed away four years prior to the bazaar's completion and was unable to witness its final outcome.
The Clock Tower in Edirne Castle is one of four towers that stand at the four corners of the walls that surround Hadrianopolis, a Roman emperor Hadrian founded city. In 1866-1867, Haci Izzet Pasha, one of the governors of Edirne, added wooden floors and clocks to the tower, leading to its eventual renaming as the Clock Tower. Following excavations, the Macedonia Tower and its surroundings, the only surviving structure from the city's towers, were transformed into an "Urban Archaeology Park."
The world's longest stone bridge, the Uzun Bridge, was built in 1427 during the reign of Murad II and completed after sixteen years of labor, becoming operational in 1443. The strategic importance of the bridge stems from its location on the routes connecting Turkey to the Balkans and Europe, making it a vital border town.
