Uganda Mbarara Tours

Mbarara is western Uganda's largest town outside Kampala, a fast-growing commercial center that most travelers pass through on the way to the southwestern parks. It sits in the Ankole sub-region, historically known for long-horned Ankole cattle, and functions as a natural stopping point between Kampala and destinations like Bwindi, Mgahinga, and Queen Elizabeth National Park. Roughly 270 kilometers and four to five hours by road from Kampala, the town has grown around trade, education, and its role as a transit point for the entire southwest. Many Uganda tours route through Mbarara on multi-day itineraries even when it is not the main destination.

The town's real draw for visitors is Lake Mburo National Park, about 30 to 40 minutes away by road, Uganda's smallest savanna park and one of the few where walking safaris and night drives are both permitted. Mbarara tours built around Lake Mburo tend to run shorter than the multi-day safaris further west, making it a practical add-on for travelers with limited time.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo covers around 260 square kilometers of acacia woodland and open grassland around the lake itself, home to zebra, eland, impala, buffalo, and both hippo and crocodile in the water. The absence of resident lions and low elephant numbers make it one of the few Ugandan parks where guided walking safaris and mountain biking are offered alongside standard game drives. Boat trips on the lake add a third way to see wildlife, drifting past hippo pods and waterbirds along the papyrus-lined shore.

Ankole Cattle Country

The Ankole longhorn, recognizable by its wide, curved horns that can span well over a meter, remains central to local identity and livelihood in the region around Mbarara. Cultural visits to Ankole homesteads let travelers see traditional cattle-keeping practices and taste ghee and milk products that have been part of the local diet for generations. The Igongo Cultural Centre, just outside town on the road to Kampala, runs a museum dedicated to Ankole and wider western Ugandan history, a useful stop for travelers who want context before or after visiting Lake Mburo.

Mbarara as a Southwest Uganda Base

Because Mbarara sits roughly midway between Kampala and the gorilla parks near the Rwanda and Congo borders, many multi-day circuits schedule an overnight stop here to break up the drive.
