Bishkek trades the mountain drama of the rest of Kyrgyzstan for wide Soviet-era boulevards, poplar-lined parks and a bazaar culture that still runs on haggling.
Ala-Too Square and Soviet-Era Bishkek
Ala-Too Square's changing-of-the-guard ceremony and the surrounding government buildings sum up the city's Soviet planning, while the State History Museum on its edge covers everything from nomadic Kyrgyz culture to the twentieth century. A few landmarks worth building into a city walk:
- Osh Bazaar for produce, felt goods and street food
- Burana Tower, a leaning eleventh-century minaret outside the city
- Victory Square's eternal flame memorial
Ala-Archa, the Mountains at the City's Edge
Within an hour of downtown, Ala-Archa National Park climbs quickly from poplar forest into glaciated peaks over 4,000 meters, popular for day hikes even without technical gear. Most travelers use the capital only briefly before heading on toward Issyk-Kul or the high Tien Shan ranges further east.
