Tour Overview

Embark on a 11-day journey through Bulgaria's cultural wonders. Starting and ending in Sofia, this tour will take you to most visited destinations in Bulgaria, including churches, towns and villages. Immerse yourself in the local culture with experiences like wine tasting and sampling traditional cuisine. 

Itinerary

At the airport in Sofia, TSG will meet and greet you. You will then be transferred to your hotel in Sofia. After checking in and getting settled, you will have some free time to explore the city on your own. You will spend the night in Sofia.

After breakfast, you will embark on a 2-hour guided tour of the city center, where you will learn about the rich history and heritage of Sofia. The tour will include visits to some of the city's most notable landmarks, such as the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the largest in Bulgaria, the Saint Sofia Basilica, which is a symbol of the city; the old Parliament Building, the Presidency, Saint George Rotunda – one of the oldest churches in Europe; and Roman Remains. You will also see other important historical buildings and sites. Once the tour ends, you will have some free time to explore the city on your own. Overnight in Sofia.

Start your day with breakfast, then embark on a day trip to visit two UNESCO World Heritage sites. Your first stop will be the Boyana Church, where you'll marvel at the incredibly well-preserved and unique frescoes from the 13th century. Afterward, you'll head to the Rila Monastery. It is the largest monastery in Bulgaria and will leave you enchanted with its beauty. Your guide will share the history of the monastery's emergence and the story of Saint John of Rila, the most important Bulgarian saint. You will also have the opportunity to visit the monastery museum and an authentic monk's room. Enjoy some free time for lunch before transferring back to Sofia. Overnight in Sofia.

Begin your day with breakfast, then head out on a day trip to Plovdiv, considered to be the oldest existing town in Europe, Plovdiv was the European Capital of Culture in 2019. The Roman Forum, the Stadium, the Theater, the main pedestrian street—the longest in Europe—the revival old town with its lovely homes and cobblestone streets, the ruins of the old fortress, and the breathtaking panoramic views from there—are just a few examples of the city's well-preserved and restored heritage that you will learn about during a guided tour. Additionally, you will discover more about the city's earlier history. After that, take advantage of your free time to eat lunch and shop. Overnight in Plovdiv.

Spend a free day in Plovdiv shopping, visiting museums, and trying local cafes and restaurants. Plovdiv has several markets, boutiques, and shopping centers where you can find traditional Bulgarian souvenirs and handicrafts, as well as modern clothing and accessories. It is home to several museums that showcase the city's rich history and culture. Today, you will be departing for Nessebar, a historic town located on the Black Sea coast and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The well-preserved old town of Nessebar is renowned for being a singular illustration of the synthesis of human cultural activities over the centuries. Numerous civilizations have left their marks there, blending in peacefully with the natural environment. The town's residential architecture is a reflection of the evolution of architectural trends throughout the East Mediterranean, including the Balkans. The town's architecture is made up of components from ancient, medieval, and second millennium BC eras. Upon arrival, you will have a 2-hour guided tour of the town. Afterward, you will have free time to explore and will spend the night in Nessebar.

Start your day with a delicious breakfast. After breakfast, we'll continue our trip to Varna along the Black Sea coast, where we'll take a guided tour of the cathedral and the Varna Archaeological Museum. We will have lunch in the city center, and then continue our guided tour to the Roman Thermae dates back to 2nd century AD, and is the largest in Bulgaria. If the weather is nice, we will take an excursion to the coast (Capo Kaliakra) or to an excavation site. Overnight in Varna.

After breakfast, we will depart for Veliko Tarnovo, a town that served as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom between the 12th and 14th centuries. It is a historic fortress situated on three hills. Once we arrive, you will have a 2-hour guided tour of the Tsarevets Hill, where you will see the old fortress and several medieval churches. After that, you will explore Old Merchant Street where you can find traditional crafts. You will have free time for lunch and shopping. After that, you will have free time to explore the town further before an overnight stay in Veliko Tarnovo.

Start your day with a nourishing breakfast. Afterwards, we will journey to the heart of the Bulgarian Rose Valley and the town of Kazanlak. In Kazanlak, you will visit the Thracian Tomb, which is famous for its decorations that depict the lives of the Thracians and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will also visit a local rosary, where you can learn about the traditional process of producing rose oil. You will have free time for lunch and will spend the night in Kazanlak.

Begin your day with a tasty breakfast. Afterwards, we will depart for Sofia. On the way, we will make a stop at the charming mountain town of Koprivshtita, known as the birthplace of the Bulgarian National Revival. The 19th-century Bulgarian National Revival Period is strongly connected to the small, charming village nestled in the Sredna Gora mountain range. On one hand, it was home to many wealthy local merchants who built their traditional, beautiful houses, many of which are now museums. You will have the opportunity to see authentic furniture and decorations and learn about the lives of the merchants during that time. In Koprivshtitsa, you will visit a few house museums, and after that, you will have free time for lunch. We expect to return to Sofia by 6 p.m. Overnight in Sofia.
