Turkey Halfeti Tours

Halfeti Tours center on a small town on the Euphrates River in Şanlıurfa Province, in southeastern Turkey. Halfeti's landscape changed permanently in the early 2000s when the construction of the Birecik Dam raised the river level and submerged part of the old town, leaving stone houses and a minaret standing partly underwater. That flooded skyline has since become the town's defining image and the reason most travelers add it to a wider Turkey route through the southeast.

New Halfeti was rebuilt on higher ground nearby after several villages were relocated ahead of the flooding, while the older riverside settlement remains partially visible above the waterline, reachable only by boat. The surrounding hills and mineral-rich soil also give Halfeti a rare feature among Turkish towns: it is the only place in the country where a naturally black rose grows, a local curiosity tied directly to the region's chemistry.

Boat Trips on the Euphrates

Small boats depart from the town's riverside dock to pass over the submerged sections of old Halfeti, where a partially collapsed minaret and stone walls still break the surface of the water. These same boats continue upriver toward Rumkale, and the calm river current makes the crossing suitable for most travelers.

Rumkale

Rumkale is a fortified citadel built on a steep rock outcrop where the Euphrates narrows, occupied in turn by Roman, Byzantine and Armenian rulers. Accessible only by boat, the site includes remnants of a church, cisterns and defensive walls carved into the cliff, with views back over the river gorge from the top of the outcrop.

The Black Rose of Halfeti

Local growers cultivate the black rose in small gardens around the town, and it typically blooms from late spring into early summer. The flower's dark color is attributed to the specific mineral content of Halfeti's soil, and it does not occur naturally anywhere else in Turkey.

New Halfeti and the Relocated Villages

Several nearby villages were resettled to higher ground when the dam reservoir filled, and New Halfeti now functions as the town's main settlement, with the riverside dock serving as the starting point for boat excursions into the older, partly submerged district.
