Midyat is a meeting point of the religions of Islam, Christianity, and Yazidis. It is situated in the Mardin province, which is known for its traditional cityscape. The district and the city date back to Mesopotamian first civilizations, and according to the Assyrian tablets of the 9th century BC, its name was Matiate. The district was ruled by the Mitannians, Assyrians, Armenians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans throughout history. Today, it is a modern city with a traditional city texture, the stage of many TV series, and is one of the most visited sites in eastern Anatolia.
