It is famous for its white-washed houses with their many windows which, seem to have been built on top of each other, which give it the nickname “town of a thousand windows”. Because of these, the town retains a unique style of architecture, with narrow and stone-paved streets. The castle is unique in Albania and among the few in the world that still has houses and inhabitants within its walls, going on their life’s at the same place their predecessors did centuries ago. Then we will have lunch in the best local restaurant. Also option visit Cobo Winery one of the best family-run winery in Albania, where we will try different wines & Raki. Drive back to Durres. Visit of the Amphitheatre from outside and the old walls and the area known as the forum. Return to the ship.

Kruje is a historic Albanian town perched on the side of a mountain. Originally inhabited by the Albani Illyrian tribe, it was also the capital of the first Albanian state in the Middle Ages, the Principality of Arber, before becoming the capital of the Kingdom of Albania. The town is also known for being recaptured by Albanian hero Skanderberg from the Ottomans in 1443. Today, the town is home to the Skanderbeg Museum, the national Ethnographic Museum, Kruja Castle and the Old Bazaar. The tour of Kruje includes all of these sites, plus the WatchTower, the Cave of Sari Salltik at the top of the Holy Mountain, and a traditional lunch where you can sample Tave Dhehu, one of the national dishes. After soaking up the history and sights of this historic town with its panoramic mountain views, the tour returns to the hotel. 

In the morning, we drive to Shkodra, which is the most important city in north Albania. The city of Shkodra is situated in the north-western part of Albania, giving its name to the biggest lake in the Balkans. The oldest wall of the Shkodra castle dates from the 1st millennium BCE. The Roman historian Livy cited the town as the capital of the Illyrian king Gent, who fought the Romans in 168 B.C. We will go to Rozafa Castle, which offers breathtaking views of the lake and the three rivers merging into the Adriatic Sea. The city’s architecture is highly influenced by the Venetian style. Most of the guests are surprised to learn that most of the Venetian masks are handmade and produced in Shkodra. The city’s favorable geographic position has always been an important trading mark through the centuries, making it possible for different civilizations to encounter each other. We will be back in Durres this afternoon.

Before reaching the ‘Stone City’ of Gjirokaster, the tour makes a short stop at the fortress of Ali Pasha Tepelene which was once frequented by British poet Lord Byron.
