Albania Vlorë Tours

Vlorë marks the point where the Albanian Riviera begins, a working port city with a long waterfront and a place in the country's history that goes well beyond tourism. It was here, on November 28, 1912, that Ismail Qemali declared Albania's independence, an event still marked by the Independence Monument overlooking the bay. The building where the declaration was signed now houses a small museum devoted to that period of Albanian history.

South of the city center, the coast road climbs into the mountains toward the rest of the Albania Riviera, and most Vlorë tours use the city as a starting point for that route rather than an end in itself.

Kanina Castle and the Old Town

Above the city, the ruins of Kanina Castle date back to Illyrian foundations with later Byzantine and Ottoman construction, and the hilltop offers a wide view over Vlorë Bay toward the Karaburun Peninsula. The city center itself blends Ottoman-era streets with the newer waterfront built up around the port.

Zvernec Island and Narta Lagoon

North of Vlorë, the Narta Lagoon is a shallow wetland known for its flamingo populations and salt pans that have been worked since antiquity. A wooden footbridge leads out to Zvernec Island, where a small 13th-century monastery sits among pine trees, reachable only on foot from the shore. Herons and other wading birds are a common sight along the bridge in the early morning, when the lagoon is at its calmest.

The Llogara Pass and Riviera Coast

South of Vlorë, the road climbs sharply through the Llogara Pass, crossing pine forest at close to 1,000 meters before dropping back down to the Ionian coast. The pass marks the start of the Riviera proper, with the sea visible from the road for most of the descent toward Dhërmi and the beach towns beyond.

Best Time to Visit Vlorë

Summer brings the warmest sea and the busiest beaches further down the Riviera, while spring and early autumn are better suited to visiting the castle, lagoon and old town without the heat. The Llogara Pass can see occasional snow in winter, so travelers planning to continue south are better off outside the coldest months.
