Khor Virap Monastery Tours visit the site most closely tied to Armenia's conversion to Christianity, a hilltop monastery on the Ararat plain roughly 45 kilometers south of Yerevan. Its name means deep pit, a reference to the underground chamber where King Tiridates III is said to have imprisoned Gregory the Illuminator for thirteen years before Gregory cured the king of an illness and converted him to Christianity in 301 AD, making Armenia the first kingdom to adopt Christianity as a state religion.
