Armenia Garni Temple Tours

Garni Temple Tours center on Armenia's only surviving Hellenistic-style temple, a colonnade of gray basalt built in the 1st century AD, likely under King Tiridates I, on a plateau above the Azat River gorge east of Yerevan. The temple originally honored the sun god Mihr and later served as a summer residence for Armenian royalty after the country's conversion to Christianity. Its fortress walls date back further still, with a cuneiform inscription identifying a stronghold on this plateau under the Urartian king Argishti I as early as the 8th century BC.

An earthquake toppled the temple's colonnade in 1679, and Soviet-era engineers reassembled the surviving columns between 1969 and 1975 using recovered fragments and early drawings of the original structure. The site lies around 30 kilometers from Yerevan and is almost always paired with other central sites on a short Armenia itinerary, particularly Geghard Monastery further up the same gorge.

The Temple and Garni Gorge

Beyond the temple platform, the grounds include the foundations of a Roman-style bathhouse with a surviving mosaic floor and traces of a royal residence. A short walk from the temple leads to the rim of Garni Gorge, where the Azat River has cut through volcanic basalt to expose hexagonal rock columns known locally as the Symphony of Stones.

Garni Village

Garni village stretches along the approach road to the temple, where local families sell dried fruit, gata pastries and lavash bread baked in traditional tonir ovens. Many day tours combine a stop here with a lavash-baking demonstration before continuing on to Geghard.

Best Time to Visit Garni

April through October offers the clearest conditions for viewing the gorge and walking the open temple grounds, since the site has little natural shade. Winter visits are possible, but the basalt columns and mountain views are easier to appreciate without snow on the access paths.
