Lake Sevan Tours

Lake Sevan Tours cover Armenia's largest lake, a high-altitude body of water sitting at roughly 1,900 meters above sea level in the eastern part of the country, about an hour's drive from Yerevan. Sevan ranks among the largest alpine lakes in the Caucasus and once covered a larger surface area before Soviet-era engineers lowered its level by around twenty meters from the 1930s onward to supply irrigation and hydropower, a decision partially reversed in later decades to protect the lake's ecology.

The drop in water level turned what was once Sevan Island, at the lake's northwestern tip, into a peninsula, and it is here that most visitors begin, at the 9th-century Sevanavank Monastery overlooking the water. Sevan is often combined with other stops on a broader Armenia itinerary, particularly toward Dilijan further north.

Sevanavank Monastery

Founded in 874 by Princess Mariam, daughter of King Ashot I, Sevanavank consists of two small surviving churches reached by a short climb from the parking area. The dark volcanic tuff of the walls contrasts with the blue of the lake below, and the site is one of the most photographed viewpoints in the country.

The Lake and Its Shoreline

Sandy and pebble beaches line stretches of the eastern shore, where Armenian families gather in summer, and the lake is known for ishkhan, a native trout once abundant enough to be considered a national delicacy before overfishing reduced wild populations. Several villages around the shoreline still base much of their economy on fishing and small guesthouses.

Best Season for Swimming
