Zvartnots Tours

Zvartnots Tours visit the ruins of a 7th-century circular cathedral on the plain between Yerevan and Armenia's main international airport, which takes its name from the site. Built under Catholicos Nerses III in the 640s and known formally as the Cathedral and Churches of Echmiatsin and the Archaeological Site of Zvartnots, Zvartnots was one of the more ambitious church buildings of its era before an earthquake brought it down in the 10th century. Excavations beginning in 1900 uncovered its circular foundation and carved stone fragments, now displayed on site and in a small on-site museum.

The ruins sit close enough to Yerevan to fit into a half-day itinerary, often paired with the nearby cathedral town of Echmiadzin as part of a broader Armenia tour.

The Cathedral Ruins

What remains of Zvartnots is largely foundation-level, with column bases and fragments of carved capitals arranged around the original circular footprint. Scholars still debate the cathedral's original height and exact form, since only the lower sections survived the earthquake, but reconstructions on interpretive panels at the site give a sense of the three-tiered structure that once stood here. The stonework includes eagle and pomegranate motifs typical of early Armenian ecclesiastical carving.

Echmiadzin

Echmiadzin, a short drive from Zvartnots, is the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church and home to its own cathedral, founded in the early 4th century and rebuilt several times since. The two sites are usually visited together, giving a contrast between Zvartnots' excavated ruins and Echmiadzin's active, still-functioning cathedral complex.
