A Gentler Altitude Before Cusco

At around 2,870 meters, Urubamba sits lower than Cusco, which is why many itineraries route through the Sacred Valley first to ease into the altitude before the city itself. The valley floor's milder air and its position along the Urubamba river also made it prime Inca farmland.

Moray's Terraces and the Maras Salt Pans

Nearby, the circular terraces at Moray drop in a series of rings whose differing microclimates may have let the Inca test crops at various simulated altitudes. A short drive away, thousands of shallow pools at Salineras de Maras have been worked for salt since before Inca times and still are today.
