Rock Art Older Than the Pyramids

Near Hargeisa in the country's north, the rock shelters at Laas Geel hold vividly preserved paintings of cattle and figures estimated at around 5,000 years old, among the best-preserved rock art anywhere in Africa. Their discovery only became widely known in the early 2000s.

A Long Coastline, Limited Access

Somalia's coast stretches along both the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, backing onto cities such as Mogadishu with a visible layer of Italian colonial-era architecture beneath the modern city. Given the security situation in much of the country, visits are arranged through specialist operators with fixed routes and local guides rather than independent travel.
