This is an opportunity to step back in time and visit a place where history was made in 1953 by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay of Nepal as they planned their ascent of the world’s tallest mountain – Mt.Everest (8848m). This 14-day Everest Base Camp trek (EBC-5365m) will take you to the exact place where these two mountaineers camped while planning their assault on Mt. Everest. This trek takes you within the UNESCO and World Heritage-listed Sagamartha National Park. On the trail to EBC you will visit the famed Tengboche Monastery where you can view this gargantuan peak, as well as other 8000 meter mountains such as Lhotse (8516m) and Makalu (8463m). A short hike up to Kala Patthar (5643m), the closest viewpoint of Mt. Everest and other Himalayan peaks, will afford some unforgettable mountain views. At EBC you can also see the enormous Khumbu Glacier as it makes its way down the face of Everest.
This trek will take you through deep gorges, lush green forests and across mountains and ridges before you reach EBC. There will time to acclimatize before ascending to these higher elevations. You will also pass through a number of villages in the Khumbu region that will give you a first-hand glimpse of what the villagers have to withstand in order to survive in the rugged Himalayan region, and also how their strong Tibetan Buddhist faith enriches their lives.
You will be stunned at the closeness of these snow covered peaks as you make your way to EBC. Looking skyward at these mountains makes you feel small and insignificant. It feels like you can literally reach out and touch them. Four of the world tallest mountains are in this region.
Your scenic flight into and out of Lukla will draw attention to the vastness of the Himalayan Mountains. On your return fight you will have a new respect for these mountains due to you having trekked through them and the valleys on your way to EBC.
Sherpa Expediton Teams will attend to all permits, meals and accommodation on the trek.

On arrival at Kathmandu airport, a representative from Sherpa Expedition Teams will meet you and take you to your hotel in Thamel. You will also get to meet your guide who will give you a briefing on what to expect on the trek. In the evening there will be a welcome dinner at a local Nepali restaurant where you will meet your fellow trekkers and guide.
This morning we have a 30 to 40 minute scenic flight to Tenzing-Hilary Airport at Lukla. We then hit the trail to Phakding following the trail next to the Dudh Koshi River before arriving at Phakding where we will stay overnight. Flights to and from Lukla are morning flights due to the unpredictable winds later in the day.
Today is an easy trekking day as we follow the trail and cross several bridges over the Dudh Kosi River via the charismatic villages of Toc-Toc, Benkar and Monjo before coming to the official entrance of Sagarmatha National Park. The trail then heads along the river flats for several hours and we cross one final bridge before climbing a steep hill to Namche Bazaar, a lively and bustling town with many modern facilities such as restaurants, hotels, internet cafes and banks.
In order to correctly acclimatize, which is crucial before climbing to higher altitudes later on the trek, it is essential that you stay active during this time. We can choose to trek to Thame or visit Khunde, or alternatively we can use this time to explore Namche Bazaar and head to the weekly market on Friday evening and on Saturday morning – if we time it right. Your guide will also take you to the Tourist Visitor Center near the headquarters of the Sagarmatha National Park that has an intriguing display of paraphernalia and relics of the first Everest climbers. Here you can also find out some interesting facts about the flora and fauna of this region.
Today we follow the fast flowing Dudh Kosi River with its icy alpine waters roaring down from the mountains. The trail has some stunning mountain views as we steadily climb higher to 3860 meters at Tengboche Village and monastery famous for its attractive wall hangings and 6 meter high Buddha, Tibetan musical instruments and brilliantly colored Lama robes. A special attraction of visiting here is sitting and listening to the evening prayer at the monastery that is both calming and peaceful.
Today we descend on a short 3 to 4 hour trek on a trail that passes through forests before we have to cross the Imja Khola (river) and through the village of Pangboche, memorable for its fields surrounded by rock walls that protect their crops from animals and the wind. Tonight we stay at Dingboche.
To assist in the acclimatization process we will follow an easy trail and head up to Chhukung. From here you will be grateful for the splendid views of Mt. Ama Dablam. The views of Island Peak from Chhukung (and further up the valley) are quite spectacular. The trail in this area is often accompanied with strong winds.
The trail today passes a number of Chortens (Tibetan shrines & tombs) and will take approximately 1.5 hours before we come to Thugla Village (4600m) where we will stop for lunch at a tea house. After our break for lunch we head toward some massive peaks, such as Mt Pumori (7161m) and Mt. Nuptse (7861m) before coming to Lobuche Village (4940m). We then follow the trail through a wide valley before coming to Thukla - and after passing the Pheriche Aid Post (4371m). The first aid post is only manned during the peak trekking seasons. We then head down to the yak pastures of the small settlement of Lobuche where we will stay the night.
Today we reach the highest point of our trek at Kala Patthar. Mt. Everest cannot be seen from Base Camp as Mt. Lhotse blocks it from view. Kala Patthar is considered the finest viewpoint in the entire Khumbu region – including Mt. Everest. You have 360-degree views of several Himalayan giants like Khumbutse, Changtse, Lhotse and Nuptse. The views from here are unbelievable! After you have taken photos of these amazing mountains we will head to Pheriche for the night.
Today we head back downhill to Namche Bazaar. The trail is initially undulating and crosses a suspension bridge and through several villages. Namche Bazaar is the main town in the Khumbu valley. After arriving here you can breathe a sigh of relief and congratulate yourself on finishing this quite challenging trek. A drink and toast to your success is in order!
This is your last day on the trail as we head back to where it began at Lukla. You will have a free afternoon that will give you time to rest and enjoy that hot shower and explore Lukla. This is another opportunity to enjoy a few celebratory drinks with your fellow trekkers.
This morning we will fly back to Kathmandu. This time you will have an enhanced appreciation of these mountains. The views will be amazing and thought provoking as you relive the days on the trail. Once back at Kathmandu you will be taken to your hotels in Thamel and have time to do some last minute shopping or take in the sights.
A representative from Sherpa Expedition Teams will drop you at the airport at least three hours prior to your departure. We hope to hear from you and look forward to your feedback. We also welcome your inquiries regarding future treks.
