Tour Overview
Check out why this is the most popular trek in the Annapurna region of Nepal. The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a photographer’s paradise where the views from Poon Hill (3210m) are some of the most stunning in the entire Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. There are many soaring snow-covered peaks, such as Annapurna South (7219m), Machapuchare (6993m), Hiunchuli, Annapurna III, Dhampus peak and Dhulariri II. You will also enjoy visiting the Gurung and Magar villages where you will see and feel the genuine warmth of the locals while passing through the villages of Ulleri, Ghorepani, and Ghandruk.
The trails pass through lush green forests that are alive with beautiful white, pink and red rhododendron flowers (especially in spring) that make you constantly reach for your camera. This trek is perfectly suited for families whose goal is to obtain first-hand the magnificent mountain views without having to go through the acclimatization process necessary when taking treks to higher elevations.
The trail heads through the Modi Khola Valley before coming to Tikhedhunga. After crossing a suspension bridge over the Modi Khola (river) we start the climb of the 3300 steps to Ulleri hill and then pass through a rhododendron forest before coming to the Magar Village of Ghorepani (2855m). If you want to enjoy the spectacular dawn views at Poon Hill and watch the sunrise on the Annapurna Ranges you will have to be up very early – before daybreak. Watching the slow rise of the sun shining off the mountains will leave you shell-struck and rewarded for your effort of getting up early this morning. There are superb 180 degree views of of Dhaulagiri (8167m), Tukuche (6920m), Dhampus, Nilgiri (2637m), Annapurna South (8091), Bhara, Sikhar and Machapuchare (Fishtail - 6993m). On the return trek to Pokhara we pass through the attractive Gurung village of Ghandruk with its customary style of houses with stone roofs - and an amazing mountain setting. This is an all-season trek.
Highlights
Itinerary
- On arrival at the airport, a representative from Sherpa Expedition Teams will be there to greet you and take you to your hotel in Thamel where dinner is included. You will have time to do some last-minute shopping or find a nice café where you can sit back and relax. Later your guide will give you a briefing on what to expect on the trek.
- Today we have a 6-7 hour road trip to Pokhara Valley and its popular Phewa Tal (lake). We will then check in to our hotel near to Phewa Tal. Along the way you can sit back, relax and appreciate the changing countryside of raging rivers, valleys and terraced farmlands and the surrounding hills. There is plenty to see at ‘Lakeside’ with its many shops, bars and restaurants. You will enjoy sitting by the lake in the late afternoon while watching the sunset over the mountains.
- Today we drive for around 1:25 hours from Pokhara via the charming Lumle Village, that sits perched on the mountainside, and then to Nayapul (1050m). The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek begins at Nayapul and after a 30-minute trek arrives at Birethanti where you will be asked to show your tourist permit at the checkpoint. We then follow the Bhurungdi Khola (river) to reach Ulleri where we will stay the night.
- Our trek begins today heading to the Magar village of Banthanti from where we have some truly excellent views of Mt. Machapuchare (6997m - Fishtail), Hiunchuli (6441m), and Annapurna South (7219m). After following the trail through a lush white, pink, and red - flowering rhododendron forest we cross a bridge before arriving at Ghorepani Village where we once again have some grand views of several massive peaks, such as Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna - that appears in the background. Ghorepani is a peaceful and friendly village where you can sit back, relax, and admire the views.
- Poon Hill is known throughout the Himalayas for its spectacular views of the Annapurna Ranges – especially at sunrise and sunset. We have a very early morning start to Poon Hill viewpoint in order to catch the sunrise and the changing colors gleaming off the mountains, such as: Dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna I (8091m), Annapurna II (7937m), Annapurna III (7855m), Annapurna IV (7525m), Annapurna South (729m), Nilgiri (6940m), Tukuche (6920m), Varaha Shikhar (7847m) & Lamjung Himal (6931m). Your only concern will be to see that your camera is fully charged. We will then return to Ghorepani for breakfast and then head to Tadapani via the scenic trail through Deurali (meaning ridge in Nepali) until we arrive at Tadapani Village.
- This morning we take the trail through oak and rhododendron forests with wildflowers present along the trail that add to the eye-catching beauty of this region. We then come to the mainly Gurung village of Ghandruk with its stunning views of Annapurna South, Gangapurna, (7455m), Machapuchare, Annapurna III and Hiunchuli. Ghandruk is the 2nd largest Gurung village in Nepal with a population of 4748 people. It has a rich culture, a museum and Buddhist monastery. Most interesting is its characteristic style of architecture with most of the houses having slate tiled roofs and stone walls. It feels as if time stood still here.
- This morning we wake up to views of the Annapurna Himalayas and then walk up steep stone steps on a trail down to Dhampus Phedi/Ghatte Khola for approximately one hour and then drive for around 30 minutes to Pokhara where we will stay the night near Phew Tal (lake).
- Today we have a road trip back to Kathmandu. If you sit on the left side of the bus you will get the best views and will see the river, gorges, mountains, small settlements and terraced farming land. Back in Kathmandu, you will be taken back to your hotel where you can relax or stroll around Thamel for some last-minute shopping. There are loads to keep you occupied in Thamel with its many bakeries, restaurants and bars.
- A representative from Sherpa Expedition Teams will take you to the airport at least three hours prior to your scheduled departure. We hope that while flying home you will be thinking of the great experience you had in Nepal and will be planning another adventure to this amazing country.
