Tour Overview

If you prefer a less crowded and more peaceful location, then this trek in the isolated Langtang Valley is just the place. The 10 day Langtang Valley trek is within the Langtang National Park, a land of natural untouched beauty that became Nepal’s first Himalayan national park in 1976. This region is inhabited by the Tibetan Buddhist Tamang people and is not far from Kathmandu which cuts back on travel time in order to reach this spectacular region. The mountain views and the warmth of the Tamang villagers make this one of the most pleasant trekking destinations in Nepal. Many homes, businesses and villages were destroyed after the 2015 earthquake and brought to an end their income derived from tourism. The resilience and resolve of these people has now rebuilt their economy with tourists now returning to this striking region.

The Langtang National Park is composed of 25% forest, and ranges from subtropical to high alpine terrains, and includes oak, maple, pine, and rhododendron forests. You will see various native animals, such as the Himalayan black bear, Himalayan Tahr, Assam macaque and red pandas on the trail. It is also said to be the home of the Yeti.

One of the highlights of this trek is the sacred Hindu Gosainkunda lakes where many pilgrims visit in August of each year. This area is also important to Buddhists who come to visit the renowned Kyanjin Gompa (Buddhist monastery). The trek begins at Syabru Besi Village and then crosses high alpine pastures where Yaks graze and passes through dense forests until arriving at Kyanjin Gompa. A trek up to Kyanjin RI (peak), offers a panoramic 360-degree view of the Himalayan Mountains before you descend through the valley and then return to Kathmandu.

Rhododendron and bamboo forests, cascading waterfalls and impressive snow-covered peaks are just some of the various attractions of this trek to the Langtang Valley. Trekking in this scenic valley will cause you to admire the spirit of these hardy Tamang mountain people and their daily survival in this merciless terrain. Fewer tourists visit this region and hence you trekking experience will be more peaceful.

Sherpa Expedition Teams will take care of all permits, meals and accommodation on the trek. This trek can be taken all year round.

Itinerary

At the airport you will be met by a representative from Sherpa Expedition Teams and taken to your hotel in Thamel. There will be a short briefing concerning your trek where you will be able to ask any questions. This evening we will provide a welcome dinner at a local Nepali restaurant where you will have an opportunity to meet your guide and other team members.

  1. This morning we head out on a seven hour road trip to the Langtang Valley. As the road climbs out of Kathmandu Valley you will have views of the Annapurna Mountains, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and other snow covered Langtang region peaks. The first place we come to is Trishuli Village and then continue climbing up to Dhunche and the entrance to the Langtang National Park. After another hour heading downhill we arrive at Syabru Besi where we stay overnight.

This morning we cross the Bhote Kosi (meaning Tibet River) that flows down from Tibet and then head higher through sub-tropical forest before connecting with the trail coming from Syabru Besi. We then descend through oak and rhododendron forests and along this leg of the trail it is possible we will come across Langur monkeys in the tree tops. We then climb up a steep hill before coming to Lama Hotel where we stay overnight.

This morning the trail leads us through a forest and along the way we will have intermittent views of Langtang Lirung from gaps between the trees. At Ghora Tabela (3,000m) we leave the forest and arrive at a Nepali army outpost. We continue along this trail and pass through a number of small settlements inhabited by herders who are here to graze their livestock, including Yak, in these high mountain pastures during summer months. Not much further down the trail we come to Langtang Village, which has mostly been rebuilt in a more modern style of architecture since the earthquake of 2015. We will stay here overnight.

Today we trek up through yak pastures and through a broad valley and with more extensive mountain views. After crossing several small streams and moraines the trail comes to Kyanjin where there is a small monastery and a government-operated cheese factory - which is where you can stock up for lunch and snacks. We will arrive before lunch which will allow you time to rest and maybe in the afternoon explore the nearby countryside. If you are feeling energetic you can head up the Valley towards Langshisha Kharka for more incredible views.

Today is another relaxing day where you may wish to head up to the moraine to see the spectacular glaciers of Langtang Lirung or ascend Kyanjin Ri that is located directly behind the village for some eye-catching views of the Langtang peaks.

From Kyanjin Gompa (monastery) we take the same trail we followed coming up the valley on the banks of the Langtang Khola (river) to Mundu village and then to Ghora Tabela. The descent is easier and quicker than the ascent. After a break for lunch, we continue along the trail and have a steep descent to Lama Hotel.

Again we retrace our footsteps to Syabru Besi while enjoying the trail through the peaceful forested hills. If you have the energy we can take a more appealing trail from Rimche via Sherpa Gaon to Syabru Besi. It will take a little longer to reach Syabrubesi, but it will be more interesting and enjoyable.

Today we head to Kathmandu on a windy and attractive road with views of the hills and gorges. At Kathmandu you will be taken back to your hotels where you can relax at your hotel or catch up on the sights in Kathmandu Valley. Tonight we have planned a farewell dinner to celebrate the success completion of this amazing journey into the Langtang Valley.

A representative from Sherpa Expedition Teams will take you to the airport at least three hours prior to your scheduled departure. On your flight home, you will have time to look back on your experience and maybe start organizing your next adventure to the vast Himalayan Mountains.
