Where the Rainforest Meets the Atlantic

Nearly ninety percent of Gabon is forest, and thirteen national parks protect the best of it. Loango, on the central coast, is the celebrated one, known for forest elephants and buffalo that wander onto the beach itself. Lope, inland along the Ogooue River, mixes savanna with forest and holds a UNESCO listing for both its ecosystems and its ancient rock art.

Practicalities for a Wildlife Journey

Tours here are expedition-style, with lodges reached by light aircraft, boat or long forest drives from Libreville. The drier months from June to September give the easiest travel and the best chance of watching wildlife on Loango's shoreline, while gorilla tracking with the park's habituated group runs in small, permit-limited parties. Pack for humidity and expect rewarding days that start early.
