Sierra Leone Tours

Sierra Leone tends to surprise people. The Freetown Peninsula has some of West Africa's finest beaches, the rescued chimpanzees of Tacugama live just inland, and the country's history runs deep. Beach, wildlife and cultural trips are all on the table.

Beaches Just Outside Freetown

The Freetown Peninsula's beaches, River Number Two and Tokeh among them, sit within an hour of the capital yet see a fraction of the visitors found on comparable West African coastlines. Fine white sand and forested headlands back most of them.

Chimpanzees and a Complicated History

Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, in forest just above the city, rehabilitates orphaned and rescued chimps and runs guided visits explaining the threats they face in the wild. Downriver, Bunce Island carries a heavier history as a former slave-trading post, a sobering counterpoint to a day otherwise spent on the beach.
