Planning Time in Naples
Three days is a workable minimum: one for the historic center, one for an excavation site, one for the coast. The city rewards slow walking, so keep the schedule loose and leave room for a long lunch.
Trips Around the Bay
The Circumvesuviana railway reaches Herculaneum in about 20 minutes and the Pompeii excavations in 40, while ferries from Molo Beverello cross to Capri and Ischia in under an hour. The Amalfi road works better as a full day with an early start.
Eating Like a Neapolitan
Beyond the famous margherita, try pizza fritta, a fried calzone sold from street windows, and sfogliatella pastries with morning espresso. Trattorias in the Quartieri Spagnoli serve a ragu that simmers for the better part of a day.
