Flamingos and Waterbirds

Their presence has shifted over the decades as lake levels have risen and fallen, and periods of higher rainfall have at times pushed flamingo numbers down as the water becomes less concentrated with the algae they favor. Alongside flamingos, the lake attracts pelicans, cormorants, herons and a long list of migratory waders, making it a destination for birders even in years when flamingo counts are lower.

The Lake and Its Setting

The lake's shoreline alternates between open mudflats, patches of acacia woodland and reed beds, giving the immediate area more variety than its flat surface suggests from a distance. Baboon Cliff, on the western rim, provides one of the more accessible high viewpoints over the water, useful for gauging how far the lake has receded or expanded in a given season.

Nakuru Town and Onward Travel

Nakuru town itself, a short drive from the lake, functions mainly as a stopover point for travelers moving between Nairobi and destinations further into the Rift Valley or toward western Kenya.
