Several villages welcome visitors for short cultural stops, offering a look at traditional homestead life, beadwork and herding practices before continuing toward the crater.

Along the way, viewpoints over the Great Rift Valley open up to the east, with the escarpment and lowland plains visible from the higher sections of the drive. These stretches of road are often where travelers get their first wide view of the terrain they have been climbing through, a useful orientation before entering the conservation area proper.

The highland air along this route is noticeably cooler than on the plains below, and mornings can start cold enough to call for a jacket even though the day will warm considerably once the drive descends toward the crater or onward to the Serengeti.
