The Plains Behind the Name
Serengeti translates to endless plains in the Maasai language, and the park lives up to it with grassland that runs to the horizon in every direction. Seronera, the central valley, holds resident lion prides and leopards that favor the sausage trees along its river year round, making it a reliable stop regardless of season.
Following the Migration
More than a million wildebeest move through the ecosystem in a rough clockwise loop, crossing the Grumeti River around June and reaching the Mara River in the north by August or September before turning south again for the December calving season. Tour timing usually follows this cycle, since the herds are never in the same place two months running.
Kopjes and Sunrise Flights
Granite outcrops known as kopjes break up the grassland and shelter cheetah and rock hyrax, a favorite subject for photographers. Hot-air balloon flights lift off before dawn from a few fixed camps, drifting low over the plains as the light comes up.
