Indigenous Siona and Secoya families have lived along the Cuyabeno and Aguarico rivers for generations, and some tours include a visit to a community for a demonstration of traditional food preparation, medicinal plants or handicrafts. These visits are usually arranged directly with the community rather than treated as a passing stop along the way.

Reaching the Reserve

Most itineraries fly from Quito to Lago Agrio in under an hour, cutting what would otherwise be a full day of overland travel. From there, a two-hour drive to the Cuyabeno bridge is followed by a canoe transfer of two to four hours, depending on the lodge and current water levels.
