The old town was listed as a world monument by UNESCO in 1978. Then you take the world's highest cable car, the Teleférico, to the foothills of the local mountain Rucu Pichincha (4,698 m). After a three-hour drive we arrived at the mountain lake Laguna Culebrilla, starting point for our 5-6 hour hike, partly along an ancient Inca trail, to Ecuador's most important Inca fortress, Ingapirca. The path leads mainly downhill: highest point approximately 4,000 m, destination at 3,200 m. On the way we passed through small mountain towns with a predominantly indigenous population.
