Las Lajas Sanctuary the second wonder of Colombia
Las Lajas Sanctuary: The Second Wonder of ColombiaLas Lajas Sanctuary is considered the second wonder of Colombia. It is located about five hours from Quito.Historically, this area was once part of Ecuadorian territory during the era of the Royal Audience of Quito.Journey from Quito to Las LajasLeaving Quito early in the morning, we will drive through several towns and cities, including Cayambe, Otavalo, Ibarra, Valle del Chota, San Gabriel, and more.At the Rumichaca Bridge, the international border, there is no formal process to cross. We simply switch cars—that’s all.Visiting the SanctuaryThe sanctuary is just 20 minutes from the border. Upon arrival, we will visit both the sanctuary and the museum. To reach the sanctuary, there is a 10-minute walk down to the river. Keep in mind that on the way back, we will need to walk uphill for about 15 minutes. After exploring, there are two options to return to the parking area. The cable car is the easiest way to get back to the top.Returning to QuitoWe will then return to the border, cross it, and switch back to our car. If you’d like, we can stop for a meal in Tulcán.Our next stop is the Tulcán Cemetery, famous for its topiary art—sculpted hedges in the shapes of animals, faces, and more. Finally, it's time to return to Quito—a five-hour drive back to the city.
