The Marshes of Southern Iraq

Near Nasiriyah, the Mesopotamian Marshes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are home to Marsh Arab communities still living in reed houses and traveling by narrow boat, much as described in ancient Sumerian texts. Ziggurats at Ur sit at the marshes' edge.

Best Time to Travel

Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons across the country, avoiding the extreme summer heat of the plains, when Baghdad and Babylon can pass 45 degrees Celsius by midday. Winters stay mild in the south and cooler in the Kurdish mountains.
