Nabataean Tombs to Rival Petra

Hegra, near AlUla, was Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds more than a hundred rock-cut Nabataean tombs, carved by the same civilization responsible for Petra across the Red Sea in Jordan. AlUla's old town and the sandstone formation known as Elephant Rock round out a day around the site.

Coral-Stone Streets in Jeddah

Jeddah's Al-Balad district, also UNESCO-listed, is built from coral stone quarried from the Red Sea and lined with tall wooden lattice windows, a style found nowhere else at this scale. It sits a short walk from the modern waterfront corniche.

Desert and the Birthplace of the Kingdom

Near Riyadh, the reconstructed mud-brick town of Diriyah marks where the Saudi state began in the 18th century, while the sheer drop at the Edge of the World escarpment gives an easy half-day desert excursion from the capital. Saudi Arabia only opened to tourist visas in 2019, so much of this is still new ground for visitors.
