Rowing Through the Karst

Ninh Binh is best explored by rowboat, gliding through low limestone tunnels along the Ngo Dong River at Tam Coc while paddy fields turn gold in late May before the rice is cut. Trang An covers a longer route through caves and past crumbling shrines, and is usually the quieter of the two.

Hoa Lu, Vietnam's Tenth-Century Capital

Before Hanoi took over as capital, two dynasties ruled from Hoa Lu, and the temples built to honor those kings still stand a short bike ride from Tam Coc. Little remains of the original citadel walls, but the site gives context to the karst scenery around it.
