Inside the Citadel

Modeled on Beijing's Forbidden City, Hue's Citadel housed the Nguyen emperors behind thick brick walls and a moat that still holds water today. Much of it was damaged in 1968 and restoration continues, but the Ngo Mon Gate and the Thai Hoa Palace give a clear sense of the original scale.

Royal Tombs Along the Perfume River

Each Nguyen emperor built his own tomb complex in the hills nearby, and no two are alike: Tu Duc's is set around a lake with pavilions for writing poetry, while Khai Dinh's mixes European concrete with traditional mosaic. A boat along the river links several of them with the Thien Mu Pagoda.
