Cai Rang, the Delta's Biggest Market

Can Tho is the largest city in the Mekong Delta, and its Cai Rang floating market is the region's biggest wholesale trade in produce. Boats loaded with watermelon, cabbage and pomelo gather before dawn, and reaching the market while the trade is still busy means an early start, usually before six.

Ninh Kieu Wharf After Dark

Back on land, Ninh Kieu wharf turns lively at night with food stalls, a floating restaurant and a footbridge lit up over the river. It's a good spot to try banh xeo, the crisp turmeric pancake typical of the south.

Canals and Rice Noodle Villages

Smaller channels around the city lead to workshops making rice noodles and rice paper by hand, powered by little more than a wood fire and a steaming cloth. Fruit orchards line many of these canals, best visited by rowboat rather than motor launch.
