The stretch of trail between Lukla and Phakding follows the Dudh Kosi, a glacial river fed by meltwater from the Everest massif further upstream, crossing it several times on wooden and steel suspension bridges. Small teahouses and mills line the path, and the forest here still carries pine and rhododendron rather than the sparser vegetation found at higher elevations. The gentle grade makes this one of the easiest days on the entire Everest Base Camp route, which is part of why it works well as an acclimatization buffer before longer climbing days begin.

Flights from Kathmandu land at the small mountain airstrip in Lukla, and porters or guides typically meet trekkers there before the group sets out toward Phakding the same afternoon. Because the walk covers relatively gentle terrain compared with later stages of the trek, it gives first-time trekkers a chance to adjust to walking with a pack and to the rhythm of teahouse trekking before the trail steepens beyond Monjo.

From Phakding Toward Namche Bazaar

Leaving Phakding, the trail continues along the river through the village of Monjo, where trekkers register at the Sagarmatha National Park checkpoint, before climbing steeply to Namche Bazaar. This section includes some of the trek's more dramatic suspension bridge crossings and marks the point where the terrain begins to feel distinctly higher and more remote.
