From Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp (EBC) in just 10 days! This is a high altitude trekking expedition to a culturally rich and fascinating region of the Himalayas. Since the early 90’s trekkers have been journeying to Everest Base Camp where Edmund Hillary (New Zealand) and Tenzing Norgay (Nepal) planned their climb of Mt Everest (8848m). Surrounded by enormous mountains, this trek takes you to a region splendid in culture, fauna and flora with views of several 8000 meter peaks. You will also view alpine lakes and glaciers and pass through Sherpa villages rich in history and traditions, such as the famous Tengboche Monastery. A highlight of this trek is heading to Kala Patthar in the early morning so as to catch the best sunrise views of Mt.Everest and other mountains. On the trail you will pass through colorful rhododendron forests that in springtime are in white, pink and red blossom. You will get to see wildlife such as musk deer and yak grazing in the alpine meadows.Your adventure begins with a 40 minute scenic plane trip from Kathmandu to Lukla and then a trek to Phakding and on to the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar that is considered the gateway to Everest. From Namche Bazaar the trail heads to Tengboche where there is a Buddhist monastery (Dawa Choling Gompa). The trail then continues on to Dingboche with its impressive views of the surrounding mountains. As we climb higher the difficulty increases making it necessary to stop and acclimatize on the way. We first follow the trail to Dingboche and then to Lobuche (4940m) before heading to Everest Base Camp (5,364m). At EBC we get to view the massive Khumbu Glacier that begins at 7,600m and ends at 4,900m. After leaving EBC we then return to Gorakshep (5185m). Very early the next morning we climb to the well-known viewpoint at Kala Patthar (5555m) where we have the most spectacular views of Mt. Everest and the Khumbu Glacier. From Kala Patthar we return to Gorakshep and then head down a steep trail to Namche Bazaar. The last section of our trek takes us back to Lukla and then by plane to Kathmandu. The Everest Base Camp trek is quite difficult, but with time spent acclimatizing at lower altitudes it minimizes any risk of altitude sickness and prepares you for climbing at higher altitudes. Sherpa Expedion Teams will organize permits, meals and accommodation on the trek.
