Nighttime temperatures at Gorakshep regularly drop well below freezing, even during the main spring and autumn trekking seasons, and altitude sickness risk is at its highest this close to 5,200 meters. Trekkers who have followed a gradual acclimatization schedule through Dingboche and Lobuche are generally better prepared for the thin air here than those who ascend too quickly. Guides typically watch group members closely at this stage of the trek, since symptoms can develop quickly at extreme altitude.

Terrain Around Gorakshep

The flat lakebed that Gorakshep sits on is bordered by the Khumbu Glacier to the east and rocky slopes rising toward Kala Patthar and Pumori to the west. Little vegetation survives at this elevation, and the landscape is dominated by grey moraine, ice, and rock rather than the forest and scrub seen lower on the trail near Dingboche and Namche Bazaar.
