The 108 Water Spouts and the Eternal Flame

The main draw at Muktinath is a wall of 108 bull-head shaped water spouts, known locally as Muktinath Dhara, fed by a mountain spring. Devout Hindus bathe under all 108 spouts as an act of purification, a cold and demanding ritual given the altitude and temperature. Inside the nearby Jwala Mai temple burns a natural gas flame that rises from the ground next to a small spring, a rare combination of fire and water that both Hindu and Buddhist traditions treat as a sign of the site's sanctity.

Getting to Muktinath

Travelers typically reach Muktinath by flying from Pokhara to Jomsom, then continuing by jeep or on foot through Kagbeni, a walled medieval village along the Kali Gandaki river. Trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit arrive from the opposite direction, descending from the Thorong La pass at 5,416 meters, which is widely considered the trek's most demanding day. Best Time to Visit Muktinath

The clearest weather for reaching Muktinath falls between March and May and again from September to November, when mountain flights to Jomsom are less likely to be disrupted by wind or cloud. Winter brings snow to the higher sections of trail and closes the Thorong La pass to trekkers, while the summer monsoon rarely reaches this rain-shadow region but can still ground flights.
