Everest Base Camp itself sits in a glacial basin surrounded by the Khumbu Icefall and neighboring peaks, so the summit of Everest is not actually visible from there. Kala Patthar solves that gap. Climbing Kala Patthar

The ascent from Gorak Shep takes roughly two to three hours each way over loose rock and thin air, with most groups starting well before sunrise to catch the mountain lit by first light and to descend before winds pick up. Kala Patthar is built into the standard Everest Base Camp itinerary rather than visited on its own, usually scheduled the morning after reaching base camp or on the way back through Gorak Shep. Some itineraries instead climb it on the outbound leg, before continuing to base camp itself, depending on acclimatization schedules and weather forecasts for the summit view.

Gorak Shep, the last settlement before both Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp, occupies a sandy former lakebed and offers only a handful of basic lodges, so most trekkers pass through quickly rather than staying more than a night or two. Guides typically watch weather patterns closely here, since a clear window over the summit pyramid can close within an hour as clouds build over the peaks.
