• Level of Size and Complexity: A lot of underground towns can be found in Cappadocia. Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are the biggest and best known. These towns aren't just caves or bunkers; they're huge buildings with many levels that go several stories below the ground. Some buildings, like Derinkuyu, could have held up to 20,000 people across their eight floors.
  

• Origins in the past: The Hittites constructed the first underground towns in Cappadocia around 1200 BCE, making them thousands of years old.
